Picasso and Football
Thursday, March 10, 2005, Last night was super cute - my flatmates texted me saying they were going to make something to eat and watch the football game at 9 and did I want to join them? So they cleaned the whole kitchen AND made dinner, and we watched Real Madrid lose to Turino in football; it was grand. I also learned a bunch of Spanish phrases, which was fun. Today we went to the Picasso museum, which has a lot of his earlier work; interesting fact, did you know that Picasso also did some sculpture? It's not very good, but it's there. Fun fact about spanish mobile phones: if you use more than 30 euros pay-as-you-go (that is, phones that don't have plans - you put money on them and when it's used up you have to recharge), you get a free 10-euro upgrade. I've gotten two within the same month, not really sure what that means. Actually to be honest my phone is kind of a mystery to me: i don't know how to check my balance so it's always a surprise when i'm out of money, etc. Ahh, gotta love it. Language spot: (from a magazine ad -- I think it's brilliant, weird marketing): "My sky is erotic at diesel.com" They don't have a word for "pull an all-nighter" in terms of studying. I feel like in English we say "pull an all-nighter" solely in terms of studying; if we want to say we were at a club til dawn, we would say "I was out all night." Well, in Spanish it's the opposite - they have a special word for "I was out all night (clubbing)" which is trasnochar. They don't, however, have a word for studying all nite -- just "stay up all night" in Spanish is kind of romantic: it's "pasar la noche a vela" (pass the night with candles). But how's that for cultural difference; we have a special way of saying "I was up all night studying" and they have a special word for "I was out all night partying." And hey Mom, good thing you sent me the Rotary packet: a very important scholarship acceptance document is due to Illinois by April 1st. I'm mailing it tomorrow, which should (hopefully) be enough time.
