Tripping

Saturday, April 9, 9:43 a.m.

We had a lazy day today (day - notice I didn't say night - the night was anything but lazy!). We woke up at 4pm -- que riiiiico - I FINALLY got a real night's sleep! And it's winter again all of a sudden, so it's cold out. We met up with Nicole and everyone for coffee in Gracia, and then wandered around until we were too cold, so we went home. We had something to eat and checked e-mail in a nearby cafe (which I think has bubble tea, miracle of miracles! I only noticed on my way out so I have to go back and make sure, but that would make me incredibly happy), and then went home to get ready to go OUT.

Tonite we saw a TERRIFIC concert - an Italian band, friends with Nicole's roommates, played at a club called Bikini. They were SUPER cool; great music (Italian ska), fun lyrics (I made the Italians translate for me), lots of energy, really good performers, and a really cool, happy vibe in the audience. As per Nicole's blog, "their music is a mix of rock, ska, Latin rhythms, and hippy stuff, and it really gets you dancing." Fun all around.

Next we met Chavi (I am SO not sure that's how you spell it ... but that's how it sounds), a Catalan friend of Cristiano's, and he drove back into the center of town where we got falafel at 1am (we were starving). Then we MIRACULOUSLY found a bar that is open past 3am (big problem in BCN -- you go out at 12, drink til 2, wander around till 3 when the bars close and then ... either go to a club or go home. Was stoked to find a bar open past 3 where we could just talk and drink and chill).

Now, it's 7:30 in the morning and we just got done getting ready for bed, after having talked for a good long while about love and other lies. I think I have had a lot of luck in my life with the amount of love I have had; I'm happy (even if vaguely unhappy at the moment). We had a really good night, really fun, but I also learned a lot. How do I say it ... I don't know exactly what but I know I learned a lot. It turns out Chavi was at the European Social Forum in London at the same time I was! It was a big surprise, and I don't know how to explain it ... the experience of the forum for me was extremely lonely; I went alone and everything, and to know that there was someone there who I know now, and who I could have been friends with ... I don't know. Part of the whole experience, I think, WAS the fact that I was alone, that I had to work through big things by myself, that there was no one there to make it easier. It's something interesting and -- disconcerting? there's a better word i'm not getting at the moment -- at the same time.

And that's it, although also I wanted to give a shout-out to Laura for listening to me tonight. I think I decided some important things and I don't think I could have done that without her listening to me ramble.

Language spot: LSD in Spanish (the actual Spanish word that they use), is "tripping." ("Has probado tripping?") But the way you say "I had a bad trip" as in, I took magic mushrooms and had a bad trip, is "Tuve un mal viaje" (literally, "I had a bad trip" - from "How was your trip to Hawai'i?")

Adendum: No, I didn't do drugs tonite; it was simply a topic of conversation.
