Baby steps
Tuesday, May 3, 6:26 p.m. I think the worst is over. I think the worst was yesterday, and it's over. I slept for 14 hours last night and my spots are going down. Another few days and hopefully they'll fade completely, thank GOD. I no longer have a runny nose; I have a cough but Nicole assures me it sounds like the "good" kind, that's breaking stuff up and getting it the hell out of my body. I just took a nap and plan on sleeping again a lot tonite. I took it easy today. I had to go back to work to drop off my books but I walked slowly to make all my connections instead of running, and it was OK. The one funny thing was that because I can't have any sun on me while my body is recovering, I had to use an umbrella. Some construction workers made fun of me, asking me where the rain was. I was too tired to flick them off but I thought it was funny anyway. The rest of the day I've spent inside at Nicole's flat, napping and chatting and being online. I think I sort of have my appetite back, which is great. Too bad I can't eat any fruit! Baby steps, baby steps. Language spot: Today's language spot is a linguistic challenge: There are at least eight different meanings for the words "make up". Can you think of all eight? I bet you can't. I bet you can't even if you work with a partner. I will reveal them tomorrow or the next day, or whenever I feel like it. If it's really bothering you, you can e-mail me. From "Blunders": An Englishman whose attire required some explaining was 57-year old bachelor Matthew Grey, whom police found in some bushes one night wearing a red rubber dress with a black rubber undersuit, a black rubber bra, a rubber cloak, long black rubber gloves, two rubber belts, a blond wig and - a truly inspired touch - a rubber bow tie. "I had had a very bad day," he explained. After a woman fainted at a check-out counter at a supermarket in Nuremberg, it was discovered that she had been trying to smuggle frozen chicken out of the store under her hat. She was taken to a hospital with suspected brain damage.
