Keiki o ka aina

Friday, July 8th, 2005, 7:13 p.m.

My last day in Hawai'i Nei. Ali has taken my board, I've gone running for the last time on my beach, had my last shave ice, and drunk my last martini at Indigo. I'm officially out.

Memories from this trip:

- ERRANDS! Would you believe that I actually enjoyed doing practically ALL of my errands just because it was so novel to actually GO to my bank instead of trying to find a time to use skype to call them, when I could access wireless and they would be there because of the ridiculous European time-zone difference? Or actually picking up the phone and CALLING my financial institution with my questions - without having to do any of the same, stated above. It was great. I: registered my Mom's car at satellite city hall, got a police report request (necessary for my eventual visa to Argentina), printed, filled-out, and faxed-in student loan paperwork, liased with Oppenheimer Funds to gain control of my stocks, mailed necessary items at the post office, applied for, received, and tested a new debit card, made several deposits, reamed out my credit card company and paid of most of my debt, went to the post office to send things to my dad for father's day, to tipperary, ireland, and to my aunt and uncle. As you can tell, errands took up quite a bit of my time, but the advantage is that my departure will be as smooth and silky as smooth, silky pajamas.
- surfing Flat Island
- seeing Spiderman with my Mom
- kayaking to the Mokes with Dana one day, and Ali, Pat, and Ryan another. Jumping off into the pool and contemplating whether the big grouping of birds meant there was a shark nearby. Sharp lava rock; sea salt; protected landbirds peacefully escaping the wind, barely hiding their eggs; the sound of wind and waves on raw island; wana (sea urchins).
- North Shore with Ali, snorkeling in Shark's cove and having yummy ono with my Mom's work friends
- hitching a ride on a canoe-sailboat and surfing the breakers off Flat Island
- doing gymnastics on perfect white sand; back walk-overs and handstands are never so fun as when done on Lanikai beach
- having lunch with my Mom on her birthday and shopping at Ala Moana

This is my Hawai'i: lindy at Atherton, beach runs, shave ice runs, kozo sushi, ono mochi, the color of tropical waters, watching the paddlers off Lanikai, the drive up to the North Shore, living in a pareo, dollar theaters, mitzvi my cat, watching John Stewart with my mom, boston's pizza, the break at flat island, the kailua library, Magic Island at sunset, and lychee martinis at Indigo.

Language spot: This one is for all my Hawai'i kids - think about how many mainlanders wouldn't be able to guess what the following foods were: laulau, manapua, li hing mui, nori, shoyu, furikake, spam musubi, lilikoi, strawberry guavas, poi, lomi lomi salmon, taro mochi, shave ice with azuki.

Or these: Bu La'ia, Eddie Would Go, Poi Dog With Crabs, suicides, waiola's, broke da mout, china walls, snow cap, Frank Delima, Pele.

I love Hawai'i. It's my home.
