Covers and vos

Aug. 16th, 2005, 7:52 p.m.

OK, honestly, what is with all the bad covers here in Argentina? We have heard more strange versions of well-known songs here than anywhere else I've ever been. Currently I'm listening to a haunting - I truly believe that is the only adjective to describe it - cover of Ruby Tuesday, if you can believe that, not to mention the electronica version of Strawberry Fields we heard, and two (bad) acoustic versions of Satisfaction AND another group doing Brown Sugar(btw wtf?? who covers the Stones?? I mean, you really think you can do better than the Stones? OK. Well, I don't.) OH, and my personal favorite, a female voice trying to do Prince's White Dove or whatever that song is. Who are these people!?

In other exciting news, the girls and I moved into our new flat a few days ago. It's not nearly as nice; it's tiny and there are no decorations **at all**, and there's no phone and no frying pans. But the location is terrific, which makes us happy. Right now the girls are in Uruguay for a three-day adventure, which leaves me some time to write and think and miss them. :)

Other happy things:
• I got a charger for my phone today, which means I will be able to be in contact with the world again!
• We went to an other fantastic tango show, which Mayte is in, the girl who teaches our tango class. She was great, the food was phenomenal, and there was free wine all night.
• Going out clubbing with Marina and getting sidetracked by going into a cool, cute, new local bar/restaurant, where we talked about literature with the owner, and came back two nights later to dine on super yummy mushroom risotto
• Buying a great new coat -- it's not too heavy, and I think it's really flattering. Plus it was only 99pesos, which is about $35.
• I got together with some people through craigslist to throw the frisbee around. It was a nice day for it, and one of the women has been working as a freelancer here for a while, so she had a lot of helpful advice about the city for me
• I saw The Island with Ewan McGregor and Scarlett Johanssen, both actors that I like, and it's always fun going to the movies

Not-so-happy things:
• Emily leaves really soon
• I lost my leather jacket in that cool club ... the night was worth it, plus now I get to buy a new one, so I guess it's not all bad
• The place that had free wireless the other day now doesn't, which doesn't bode well for the posting of blog stuff or checking e-mail ...

(Dirty) Language spot:

• Pijo in Spain means, more or less, "stupid rich kid" or "stuck-up brat." Well apparently here the word pija (which is that word, feminized), is slang for penis. Y si quieres decir pijo como la de España, dices cocheta.
• En vez de coño se dice concha.
• No dices "palabras gordas" sino "malas palabras"

OK, y ya entiendo todo de "vos." Para los que a ellos les interesan, explico:

Todos los verbos son así: el raíz + s, mas el acento por el penúltimo silabel. O sea:

Hablar = vos hablás
Beber = vos bebés
Decir = vos decís
